High-speed chase leads to arrest in tunnel

By Associated Press 11:22 AM June 23, 2014
WHITTIER, Alaska (AP) –

A 22-year-old driver chose a challenging route as he fled from Alaska State Troopers: the Portage Highway, which leads to a one-lane mountain tunnel to Whittier.

Troopers say they caught up with Tylor Arndt of Soldotna and charged him with failure to stop at the direction of a peace officer, assault and other counts.

A Girdwood officer tried to stop Arndt for an equipment violation Sunday afternoon at Mile 73 Seward Highway.  Troopers say Arndt fled at speeds that reached 110 mph and turned on the Portage Highway.

In the Whittier Tunnel, he passed and sideswiped a sport utility vehicle, exited and ran.

He was found behind a portable toilet.

Police say Arndt has outstanding felony arrest warrants for a probation violation and eluding. He remained jailed Monday in Anchorage.
