GOP hopeful proposes response to third-party money

By Associated Press 11:40 AM June 10, 2014
JUNEAU, Alaska (AP) –

Republican U.S. Senate hopeful Dan Sullivan says he supports the U.S. Supreme Court decision that helped pave the way for unlimited spending by outside groups in campaigns even as he proposed a way to curb outside influence in his race.

Sullivan on Tuesday asked Democratic Sen. Mark Begich to sign a pledge calling on special interest groups to stop TV and radio ads by July 4 that identify either of them and support or attack their candidacies.

If the ads continue, the candidate that benefits from such ads would contribute an amount equal to half the ad buy to a charity the other candidate chooses.

Begich spokesman Max Croes cast Sullivan’s comments as hypocrisy.

Sullivan didn’t include the other Republicans running, noting outside groups have focused on him and Begich.
