Anchorage is known for its beautiful trails. Unfortunately, it's also known for being messy when a random winter thaw moves in. With the recent thaw, getting into the great outdoors may be harder for some. One solution is to head over to the Coastal Trail. Westchester Lagoon has softened a bit, but maintenance crews say the lagoon is still safe to skate on.

"The lagoon is frozen, safe to skate on. There's lots of ice. It's a couple feet thick, so that's not a danger. There's just a few soft spots, so if you fall, you'd get a little wet," said Ken Hardy of Anchorage Parks and Recreation.

While the trail may be too icy for skiing, the warm temperatures are inviting to others: like bikers.

"It's good. It's really hard and

fast and nice and warm. So I don't have to worry about bundling up," said Coastal Trail user, Austin King.

My bike has been in the garage all winter and the spring-like weather is just the excuse I need to take a ride with the pooch.

Of course, you want to be cautious when it's slick out. But a walk along the Coastal Trail, a run or a bike ride are all great outdoor activities during midwinter meltdowns.

"It's worth it. It's worth it. I wish I had my grippers on, but it's worth it. It's nice to get out to be out, no matter what the weather is," said Kate Sandberg, who was visiting from Girdwood.

And there's no more beautiful trail in all the city, regardless of the season, than the Coastal Trail.
