This is for all of you who have never shot a gun:
CBS 11 News went out to Rabbit Creek Shooting Range to try out some shooting.
The weather may have been cold but...
"The range is hot...alright," said Tim Thomas of Rabbit Creek Shooting Range.
There is little room for mistakes on the range, so before I got to the good stuff, I had to sit down with a pro.
He had a lot to tell me."The very first thing we ask them to do is read our range rules, because they're all very important; and we want to make sure people understand how we do business here on this range," said Rabbit Creek Shooting Range Instructor Marty Harris.
Now armed with information, and a 9-millimeter, it's off to the handgun range. After that it was rifles. Thanks to the scopes, my shot got better.
- "Hey alright! Within the bullseye . Got a couple of shots in there. Not bad."
I finished up with a shotgun. There I faced my biggest test.
- "If you've got that left eye taking over, that could be a problem. Well, yeah, probably."
If you're like me, right-handed, left-eye dominant, the problem is perspective. It shifts to the left. The solution: move the gun to the other arm or shut your dominant eye.
Whatever your size or skill level, the guys are all NRA certified to help you be a straight shooter.
"We do have ladies instructional classes here. We do a lot of bear safety classes. We have a big youth league here. Right now we run about a hundred kids through our shotgun league. We do all the hunter education here as well," said Thomas.
Armed with this group of teachers, you're sure to hit your mark.
The Rabbit Creek Shooting Range is a state run facility. Its primary goal is to promote hunting and gun safety education, but their firing ranges are open to the public. They're open Wednesday through Sunday.
