GCI announces planned leap in Internet speed

By Associated Press 1:34 PM December 19, 2013

General Communication Inc. president and CEO Ron Duncan says the investment is expected to run well over $100 million.

ANCHORAGE – Alaska’s largest telecommunications company says it plans to provide Internet speeds so fast in Anchorage that residential customers will be able to download a high-definition movie in 18 seconds.

A company official says the average current download time in the U.S. is 30 minutes.

General Communication Inc. president and CEO Ron Duncan says the investment is expected to run well over $100 million.

Duncan announced the venture Thursday at a news conference.

GCI says the upcoming boost dubbed “fiber re:D (red)” will introduce Alaska’s first one-gigabit Internet service. Speeds will be increased incrementally, with the full speed slated for completion by 2015.

According to GCI, about a dozen cities in the nation have that kind of residential gigabit service, which is 100 times faster than the U.S. average.
