Fur Rondy wraps up with reindeer, poker

By KTVA CBS 11 News 10:52 AM February 28, 2014

The 10-day event attracts tens of thousands of visitors.

ANCHORAGE – The most popular winter festival in Alaska comes to a close this weekend, but there’s still plenty of Fur Rondy left to enjoy.

Executive Director Jeff Barney said popular events like the Running of the Reindeer, the Fur Rondy poker tournament and the annual Miners and Trappers Ball are still to come. Barney said the success of the 10-day event has been dependent on volunteer and sponsor support and — so far — a streak of fantastic February weather.

“It’s been quick, but from my perspective it’s been great,” Barney said. “Weather was great, dog races, for us, were incredible.”
