Frequent flyer miles: Worth it?

By KTVA CBS 11 News 12:09 PM December 24, 2013

Travel Guru Scott McMurren said the miles can bring everything from waived fees to free bags.

ANCHORAGE – Racking up frequent flyer miles could have big benefits for Alaskans.

Travel Guru Scott McMurren said the miles can bring everything from waived fees to free bags.

“For many of us here in Alaska, that’s our secret savings account,” he said.

One example: Earning 20,000 Alaska Airlines miles means MVP status. Passengers with MVP status have access to better seats, a special 800 number with minimum hold times, two free checked bags, access to first-class upgrades and a 50 percent mileage bonus.

Flyers who reach the MVP Gold level see even bigger perks, including express security lines at select airports.
