First inning grand slam gives Bucs big win over Pilots

By KTVA Sports 10:58 AM July 19, 2014
ANCHORAGE –

Talk about making one hit count. Before the Bucs recorded their second hit, they had a 5 run lead.

Evan Powell’s grand-slam in the first inning keyed the Bucs’ 8-1 win over the Glacier Pilots Friday night in Alaska Baseball League action at Mulcahy Stadium.

The Bucs’ 5-0 advantage came on the one hit-the Powell slam.

USC freshman pitcher Bernardo Flores endured a rough outing, walking four of his first five batters, before Powell sent the first pitch he saw over the left field fence.

The Bucs added another run in the first for a 6-0 lead, while using six pitchers in seven innings.

The game was part of this weekend’s Scout Showcase. Major League Baseball representatives and scouts have traveled to Anchorage in search of that next gem to bolster their clubs.

In the earlier games, the Chinooks topped the Oilers 7-4 and the Goldpanners picked up a 2-1 win over the Miners.

All six teams will be in action at 1, 4 and 7PM on Saturday as the festivities…and auditions continue.
