Fire leaves 50 people without homes in Fairbanks

By Associated Press 10:34 AM January 29, 2014

Several occupants were being treated for smoke inhalation, burns and cold-related injuries at Fairbanks Memorial Hospital.

FAIRBANKS, Alaska (AP) – A fire has destroyed an 18-unit apartment complex in Fairbanks, and one man has been rushed to Seattle for treatment of burns.

The Fairbanks Daily News-Miner reports (http://is.gd/EDXwPo) firefighters used ladders to rescue several people from the burning building on Geraghty Street Wednesday morning. Fire Chief Warren Cummings said they were trying to account for two occupants from two of the apartments.

The two-story building had apartments on the second floor and a secondhand furniture store on the first.

Several occupants were being treated for smoke inhalation, burns and cold-related injuries at Fairbanks Memorial Hospital.

More than 50 people have been displaced because of the fire, and the Red Cross has set up a shelter at University Community Presbyterian Church.
