Fire destroys East Anchorage duplex

Days before Thanksgiving, an evening blaze displaced several Anchorage residents

ANCHORAGE – A structure fire destroyed an East Anchorage duplex Tuesday night.

Firefighters said the blaze on the 5600 block of Alora Loop began just before 7 p.m. About 13 fire crews responded to the 911 call: At one point, the flames collapsed an interior staircase.

“With this type of neighborhood the buildings are very close together, and with that volume of fire outside of the building it was starting to catch the next house on fire,” said firefighter Danny Costanios. “We concentrated our efforts to keep the fire from going to the other buildings as much as possible.”

There were no injuries reported in the fire, which firefighters believe started in the garage. The American Red Cross responded to help the people displaced by the destruction.
