East High hopes to turn things around with new tight end

By Jake Edmonds 10:39 AM August 9, 2014

The 2013 football season was one to forget for the East High School Thunderbirds. The team went 1-7 in the regular season and allowed more than 30 points per game, failing to make the playoffs for the first time since head coach Jeff Trotter took over in 2011.

The Thunderbirds are looking to turn that around in the 2014 season.

“We were just so young last season and had some injuries,” explained Trotter. “A lot of the returning guys are still in their same spots.”

Trotter says he’s lucky to have those same players back for another season.

“The JV and the C team had a very good year last year, so they’re stepping right in,” he added.

Trotter says the Thunderbirds to watch this season—and it’s hard to miss him—Sanetarini Tosi, a senior.

“He’s being highly recruited,” said Trotter. “Good grades, good person, he’s a great leader. The kids follow him. He knows the playbook from front to back, all positions. He’s just one of those dream players you hope to get every once in a lifetime.”

Trotter says he plans to try Tosi at tight end.

“But we plan on running the ball quite a bit, and he’s honestly got some of the better hands on the team,” said Trotter. “He’s extremely athletic, but we want to set that edge and let him see how he can go out there.”

Tosi says he welcomed the new position with disbelief.

“I didn’t believe him for the longest time until camp last week,” said Tosi. “He told me mid-summer at workouts. He’s like, ‘You’re going to go tight end.’”

With Tosi on the edge, the happiest group on the field might just be the running backs.

“He’s a brick wall,” said running back Parker Martin of Tosi. “You can’t see much, but just follow him and he’ll show you to the promised land.”

Blocking will be Tosi’s main priority, but he’s got additional plans for this season.

“My goal is to get just one touchdown,” he said.
