Driver killed in Seward Highway collision was intoxicated, police say

By Hope Miller 4:30 PM July 29, 2014
ANCHORAGE –

A 29-year-old Whittier woman had twice the legal limit of alcohol in her blood when she was killed in a March Seward Highway vehicle collision, the Anchorage Police Department announced Tuesday.

Salafai Carol Iosefa, a volunteer firefighter with the Whittier Fire Department, was traveling southbound in the northbound lane in her Honda Civic near Potter Marsh when she struck an Alaska Industrial Trucking tanker head on.

The tanker truck driver, 61-year-old Ronald Guettinger of Fairbanks, tried to avoid the crash, according to a statement from APD spokeswoman Dani Myren. A video system in the tanker truck captured footage of the crash.

Guettinger was sober at the time of the collision and no criminal charges were filed against him, Myren said.

This is the second deadly DUI crash in Anchorage this year, Myren said. Back in February, a 17-year-old driver was killed in a South Anchorage rollover.
