UPDATE: The Seward Highway was reopened shortly after 9:30 a.m., with Chugach Electric crews still working to repair the line.
ANCHORAGE – A power line stretching across the Seward Highway north of Girdwood has completely closed the road until at least 9 a.m. Tuesday, Alaska State Troopers said.
In an email sent early this morning, trooper spokeswoman Beth Ipsen said the downed line was reported to troopers in Soldotna shortly after 4 a.m., when a Ford F350 drove into the power lines on the roadway at mile 91 of the Seward Highway. The driver of the truck was uninjured, Ipsen wrote. The truck was not.
The lines stretch across both north and southbound lanes, she said. Chugach Electric crews arrived at the scene around 7:30 a.m., and estimated it would take at least several hours to repair the downed lines.
A spokeswoman for the Anchorage School District said all school bus services to and from Girdwood are canceled today.
