Alaska drivers have until May 1 to remove studded tires from their vehicles or risk a fine.
While the deadline is still several weeks away, Anchorage tire shops say they’re already seeing an influx of customers and expect to stay busy through the month of April. With a little planning, though, you shouldn’t have to wait too long for a tire changeover.
“Because we do everything by appointment, when you come in for an appointment we try to get you in the bay right away, usually we try a five-minute wait, get you in, a half-hour in the bay and then out the door,” said Tami Nuxall with Alaska Tire Service.
Drivers caught using studded tires after the May 1 deadline could receive a correctable citation for $50 per tire.
