Crews in Barrow struck three whales and landed two Wednesday evening; the first catches of the spring season.
According to the Alaska Eskimo Whaling Commission, Barrow crews captained by Ned Arey, Chuck Hopson and Jacob Adams have all landed whales as of Thursday afternoon. Adams’ crew struck a second whale but did not land it, the commission said.
In Wainwright, a crew captained by Jack Panik struck and landed a whale, while John Hopson’s crew wasn’t so lucky. Point Hope crews captained by Rex Rock and Clark Lane have successfully struck and landed three whales so far this season, the commission said.
There are 11 whaling communities along Alaska’s Arctic coast, according to the AEWC.
