Concerns that bill could create new districts

By Associated Press 11:45 AM March 5, 2014

Both bills remain in committee.

JUNEAU, Alaska (AP) – Members of the House Education Committee have expressed concerns that allowing for non-profits and others to authorize charter schools could lead to more school districts.

The bill, from Republican Rep. Lynn Gattis, would grant chartering authority to government agencies, education-related nonprofits and accredited post-secondary institutions. Currently, the authority rests with local school districts.

Gattis told the committee her intent was to debate aspects of her bill and take from it elements that can be incorporated into Gov. Sean Parnell’s omnibus education bill, also before the committee.

Rep. Paul Seaton, a Republican from Homer, said Gattis’ bill would create new school districts.

Both bills remain in committee.
