Watchstanders in Juneau first received the request for assistance Tuesday afternoon.
ANCHORAGE – Two boaters were rescued by the U.S. Coast Guard Tuesday after their vessel — the 32-foot Atlantis — struck a rock about 25 miles northeast of Sitka.
The Coast Guard said watchstanders in Juneau first received the request for assistance Tuesday afternoon. After good Samaritans aboard another boat towed the disabled Atlantis to a nearby beach, the Coast Guard said a MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew from Coast Guard Air Station Sitka was able to hoist the injured boaters to safety.
The two people were taken to Mt. Edgecumbe Hospital for treatment.
According to a Coast Guard statement issued Wednesday afternoon, Sitka Mountain Rescue was notified of the incident and towed the Atlantis back to Sitka.
The Coast Guard reported 12 mph winds and 24-degree temperatures at the time of the rescue.
