But if you think it's just for tourists, you're missing out on a beautiful part of Alaska.
Things are finally opening up at Portage Glacier, so CBS 11 News decided to take a cruise. The pace is picking up down at Portage. Thousands from all over the world pile onto boats every year to see sights they'll never see elsewhere. But we're lucky, by Alaska standards, Portage is practically in our own backyard.
"Even if you're from Alaska, it's a beautiful way to spend a couple of hours. And yeah, it's great for kids. It's great for adults, very easy way to travel," said Katherine Sego Culpepper, who saw a glacier for the first
time. The thaw is still on so, waterfalls are everywhere and there's lots of lake ice. In fact, a rare west wind had pushed all the ice right in front of the glacier, turning our mild cruise boat into an ice-breaking machine.
"We didn't know we'd get a bonus of an icebreaker on the side. And that was quite something to see, with the candle ice and the sound of it. Really gorgeous," said Peter and Nancy Young of Portage Cruisers.
This cruise is a good fit for kids or seniors, since it only last about an hour. So whether you've been before, or have yet to cruise in Portage, give it a ride this summer. Your senses will thank you!
"Oh yeah, I'd come back. Definitely, again. I think it's totally worth it. And kids love it, so why not?" said Culpepper.
It is often windy on the lake, so dress appropriately. For cruise schedules and prices, click below:
