UPDATE:
The search has been called off. Authorities no longer believe that a human has fallen into the lake.

Officials say someone may have fallen through the ice and into Portage Lake. The call came in around 4 p.m. Wednesday from the Begich-Boggs Visitor Center where witnesses say they saw a dog sitting on the ice and worried that a person might have fallen through. There is also an abandoned car in the parking lot.

As of this posting, a victim has not yet been located. The Anchorage Fire Department, Alaska State Troopers and volunteers from Girdwood are on scene. High winds, rain and avalanche debris are making it too dangerous for divers to start their search.
