For some, the late season snow has set back hopes for an early spring. But you won't hear a word of complaint from this group.
"And with the snow? With snow? That's great! Hey, this, this is the last of the snow, you know. Let's enjoy it!" said group leader, Toshihide Hamachan Hamazaki.
Alaska Outdoors got started four years ago with one objective: to get you outside. So even if the weather is less than ideal, the hikes go on. The group is made up of social hikers who take to the area's trails two nights a week. Everyone is invited to join in.
"Monday nights is family night; and we hike, generally flat, relatively easy trail. But Thursday is when we get up into the mountains and see beautiful views of Anchorage and the inlet. It's a very safe group, friendly; everyone says hello," said Outdoor Alaska hiker, Melissa Jean.
It won't take long to make friends. And it won't be too long before you realize there is a lot of land to cover in the Anchorage Bowl. Every week, the group hikes a different path.
"It's a great way to see Anchorage. We have a tremendous amount of trails close to where we live in the city. And it's amazing the wildlife you can see, the scenery," said Jean.
There was no shortage of great scenery for CBS 11 News with the fresh snow on the mountains and a couple of onlookers from above. The hikes start up once the work day winds down, around 6:30 in the evening until 8. You might not want to jump right into the Thursday hikes if you're new to hiking. But Monday hikes are at a great pace for just about anyone.
"Dogs, kids, bring them all. Always," said Hamazaki.
"I was actually looking for a way to meet my mister wonderful. So, I was hoping to find him with a hiking group. Did it work? No, I met him at the pet store," said Jean.
There is a whole lot to see and a whole lot of exploring to do. This group may be just the way to get out and see it all.
