Alyeska has tacked up more than 750 inches this year. On a day like the day CBS 11 News was there, the scenery is always the main attraction at the resort. But Alyeska's highest praise is for the fresh powder. The upper mountain has received well over 10 feet of new snow last week.
Spring may be on its way here in Anchorage, but try telling that to skiers down in Girdwood.
"Ten today. Yeah, 10. It's a perfect 10!" said skiers Billy Lyon and Calvin Wagner.
"For spring skiing, this is exactly what the doctor ordered," said Jason Lott of Alyeska
Ski Resort.And where there is plenty snow, there are plenty skiers. The slopes were buzzing with riders carving up the fresh powder. I wanted to get in on the action, but it had been a long time since I slapped on a pair of skis. I wasn't sure what to expect. Gravity and I had some run-ins at first; but after a couple runs, we were getting along just fine. I had the help of a young skier eager to give me some pointers.
"If you're skiing down black diamonds, don't keep your skis way apart, otherwise you'll fall down. Yeah, it's happened to me a couple times," said five-year-old black diamonder, Cody Konop.
The mountain is open seven days a week for spring skiing. But you have to get there during the day. Night skiing is closed for the season. If you don't know how to ski or snowboard, lessons are given daily.
