I am happy to say that, while there are many variables in forecasting weather, most of the time, we get it just about right.
I am now sorry to say that this morning was not one of those times.
Snow began around 7:30 in Anchorage and continued throughout the morning. By 11:00 am at our studios in Spenard, we had recorded 3'' of new snow. Anchorage can expect anywhere from 2''-5'' today before warmer air aloft overruns cooler air at the surface and the threat of sleet or freezing rain emerges tonight. In fact, the National Weather Service in Anchorage has issued a freezing rain advisory for Anchorage, the Matsu, and Talkeetna beginning at 6 pm this evening and continuing until 5 am tomorrow morning. There is still some uncertainly that the warmer air aloft will be sufficient to cause icing, but, regardless, the threat is still there, so plan accordingly. If freezing rain does occur, roads will become very treacherous. Use extreme caution while driving all day today, as already slick roads from the snow this morning, may become more slick tonight.
The silver lining in all of this are the mild temperatures. Highs will remain in the upper 20's to lower 30's the next couple days with lows in the 20's.
