Ted Stevens

The process to oust Sen. Ted Stevens (R-AK) from the U.S. Senate could begin as early as Tuesday.

Sen. Jim DeMint (R-SC) says he will offer a motion Tuesday morning to vote the embattled senator out of the Republican Conference.

If Stevens were voted out, he would lose his four committee seats – on Rules, Appropriations, Commerce and Homeland Security. But it would take a two-thirds vote of the entire Senate to oust Stevens altogether.

Stevens has been calling fellow lawmakers, asking them to hold off on making any judgments until after the appeals process.

The last time a senator was expelled was in 1862 - for supporting the Confederate rebellion. Since then, anyone who has come close to being expelled has just resigned.

The vote to boot Stevens could be postponed until after election results are finalized.
