Summer is a time when the kennels at the Anchorage Animal Control shelter are often full; but a program right here on KTVA, CBS 11 News is helping to bring those numbers down. We call it our Pet of the Week.

Every Tuesday, during CBS 11's morning news, we profile a pet that needs a new home. Workers at the shelter tell us, more often than not, they find one.

Workers say some 83 percent of the animals that were featured on CBS 11 News last year were adopted. That is particularly good news for cats. With much lower adoption rates than dogs, the shelter literally puts hundreds of cats to sleep every month. It's a sad fact, considering that most of these animals were once part of a family.

tells CBS 11 News that many of the animals have come from previous homes and are already accustomed to being someone's pet. So they will make great additions into someone's home, because they don't have to make a huge adjustment.

Anchorage Animal Control: Animals up for adoption

People who adopt an animal from the shelter are helping to break the cycle of unwanted pets. They are also helping to add to the number of success stories, one-by-one.

If you'd like to bring a new animal into your life, please consider the shelter. They are located at 4711 Elmore Road and are open seven days a week. The hours are 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays.
