There are a lot of one-of-a-kind adventures to be had here in Alaska. But not many can outdo the thrill ride CBS 11 took.

We experienced a mix of Alaska's sport with Alaska's beauty—and it's all just down the road.

We were atop the Punch Bowl Glacier. We took some dogs out for some hardcore mushing.

It's a rare summer home: atop one thousand feet of ice and snow and miles from anywhere. Fortunately, for the mushers CBS 11 met with Chugach Express Tours, they've got 60 neighbors to keep them company.

Yo get to this remote, glacial village we hooked up with Alpine Air Alaska out of Girdwood. The helicopter flight is awesome—10 minutes of scenery only Alaska can provide.

When we touched down, we were at over 3,000 feet and in a far different landscape than what we had just left. After taking some time to get to know dogs, we selected a few to slip into harnesses. Then we got briefed on safety. The dogs were more than ready to go. And after the safety briefing, we were too.

"The scenery speaks for itself. But then as the tour unravels, it becomes more about the dogs. And it becomes more about dog mushing. And, all of a sudden, you're surprised. It has surpassed anything you could have imagined," said sled dog owner, Dario Martinez.

Mushing in the summer is very comfortable for us. But for the dogs, it can feel like running in 110 degree heat. So frequent stops for a snow bath were a must.

"In the end, the snow provides the dogs the opportunity to cool themselves. That's why we can do the running we do," said Martinez.

"That was the most amazing thing I've ever done in my life! It's incredible, huh? Oh yeah!" said George and Merlin Bork who were visiting Alaska.

It is not just tourists that get a kick out of the summer mushing. It is a unique experience for all.

"You know, we don't get out enough. And this is a great opportunity, in a very short amount of time, to do exactly that," said Martinez.

As the sun lowered, it was time to pack up and finish up the tour back in Girdwood. We said goodbye to the helicopter and our day was done. It was a blast!

Alpine Air Alaska and Chugach Express team up every summer for glacier dog mushing. But they keep busy doing tours year round. For more information, click below:
