Every year, the University of Alaska Anchorage’s Theatre Department hosts the New Dances program. This year there are 10 diverse dances that will be performed.
The director, Brian Jeffery, says he started it 15 years ago to showcase the talent within the department. According to Jeffery, the performances are mostly contemporary dance pieces. The styles, however, are completely different. One of those dances, called “PRE-,” features a live marimba being played during the performance. Jeffery mentioned another one is called “Spring Returns,” and is an homage to spring. He added that during that performance, dancers will create a dancing garden on stage.
The event is family friendly and will start Thursday, April 13 and end on Sunday, April 16 at the UAA Main Stage Theatre. Performances will start at 8 p.m., except on Sunday which starts at 6 p.m. Tickets are available at ArtsUAA.com.
