Getting back in the workforce can be a scary proposition, especially if you haven't worked in years. CBS 11 News found a program that can give women the confidence they need to get a new start.

We often tell you how people are breaking the cycle from all kinds of problems, but what we don't often tell you about is how some of those people are taking the next step. In this Break the Cycle report we will look at how women who have overcome challenges that have placed them in prison, a shelter, or even just years at home, are returning to the work world--with the clothes they need to succeed.

It's easy to miss the tiny sign on the strip mall store on Northern Lights Boulevard, but women who are new to the work world would be wise to check it out. The Wild Iris Clothes Closet, run by the Women's Resource Center, is a place that can provide professional clothing, free of charge, to women who are trying to make a change.

"I think we all know that looking good helps us feel good about what we are embarking on. And that's what we want to get across to women. We can help them as they take their next step," said Deputy Director Diane Ogilvie.

Jayne Sheppard was shopping when CBS 11 News caught up with her at Wild Iris. A, single mom, she was supporting herself as a waitress; but now she's ready to move up. She came to the Clothes Closet for an interview suit and landed a job in an office.

"Well I got a really nice business suit, because you want to look a step up above what they normally wear. And that was good advice and they helped us pick. Put a really nice suit, but I don't have to look that sharp every day. So I need some comfortable, nice looking office clothes," said shopper, Jayne Sheppard.

The rules say women can choose three complete outfits for free. But they also get lots of advice--and not just about what colors look best. Helpers at the Closet take time with every woman to assess what will help them succeed.

"We work with them, in terms of letting them try on clothing, get a sense of what they look good in. Often times, we will then ask if they need other support, in terms of development. We have the ability to actually work with them on resumes and putting their best foot forward," said Ogilvie.

Feeling comfortable, feeling confident: that's the idea behind the Clothes Closet. They are helping women to break the cycle of unemployment.
