Death was an accident, police say
ANCHORAGE – The body of a 58-year-old man was found Thursday after he was reported missing almost a month ago from his Eagle River home.
At about 2 p.m. Thursday, police received a call from a relative of Stephen Gingrich who said he had found Gingrich’s body in a crawl space under his Hiland Road home, buried under a concrete slab, according to a statement from Anchorage police.
It’s believed Gingrich was digging under the slab when it fell and crushed him, according to the statement.
A concerned neighbor reported Gingrich missing Nov. 16 after not seeing or hearing from him in about two weeks. A Facebook page with more than 350 members called “Stephen Gingrich Missing” was also created to help find him.
The basement where he was found was originally searched after the missing person’s report was filed, but “a large amount of debris and clutter had further obstructed Gingrich’s body from being located at the time,” the statement said.
His next of kin have been notified, and police are working with the Anchorage Fire Department to determine a way to safely recover the body.
