People on the Yukon River depend on the chum commercial fishery but they need to avoid catching endangered king salmon in the process. To make it even more complicated, kings and chums run at the same time.
Communities in the region have been trying different techniques to solve that problem. In this web extra, you’ll hear from Stanley Pete from Nunam Iqua. Pete uses a technique called beach seining. You’ll also hear from Tiffany Agayar from Alakanuk. Tiffany is a commercial dip netter. Both offer a perspective on solutions to improve king salmon numbers for the region.
Thanks to both for making the trip to Anchorage for this interview. The program, Yukon Kings: On The Rebound? airs on Sunday, October 4 at 4:30 p.m. and again at 10:30 p.m. It will repeat on Thursday, Oct. 8 at 8:30 p.m.
