Using alternative energy to combat climate change is a concept that drew international attention during President Obama’s visit to Alaska last week. In fact, in a speech at the GLACIER conference, Secretary of State John Kerry specifically mentioned a power program in the Bristol Bay community of Igiugig.
Igiugig has been a test site for using the river’s current to generate power. In this web extra, we talk with Doug Johnson director of business development at the Ocean Renewable Power Company, the company that designed the Igiugig River Generation.
We also talk with Meera Kohler, president of the Alaska Village Electric Cooperative, which serves 56 communities across the state.
Tune in for our full show where we feature several alternative energy concepts. Power of Ideas airs Sunday, September 6 at 8:30 a.m. and 10:30 p.m.
