Whether you catch it or eat it, fishing is something almost every Alaskan can relate to.
Despite that, the commercial fishing industry is not well understood by the average Alaskan.
Laine Welch, of Alaska Fish Radio, has worked for almost three decades to change this. Frontiers host Rhonda McBride takes you behind the scenes of Welch’s homegrown media empire in Kodiak — it’s a chance to find out why she’s earned the nickname “Ms. Fish,” as well as a chance to learn more about the personal side of a woman who had some early struggles before launching her career in fisheries reporting.
Andrew Jensen, editor of the Alaska Journal of Commerce, is also featured on the Sunday, June 7, episode of Frontiers.
Some of the issues discussed:
- Innovation in the fishing industry
- Upcoming Bristol Bay salmon season
- The state budget’s impact on fisheries
- Ballot Initiative to ban setnetters
