Banged up sleds and bodies are the theme of Iditarod 42

By KTVA CBS 11 News 8:22 PM March 5, 2014

"Survival is part of the strategy," says Mitch Seavey

McGRATH – Even for the veterans, Iditarod 42 has been brutal so far.

“Survival is part of the strategy,” said Mitch Seavey, winner of the Last Great Race in 2004 and 2013. “There’s not much you can do other than try to get safely to the next point.”

At one point, his dogs dragged him a quarter of a mile with the sled tipped over on its side.

“We’re not unused to dirt, but I think we had rain frozen into the surface of the dirt so our brakes wouldn’t grab,” Seavey said. “It was like concrete.”
