Avalanche mitigation causes Seward Highway closures

A Turnagain Arm avalanche advisory was issued Friday by the Chugach National Forest Avalanche Information Center.

ANCHORAGE  - Drivers traveling between Girdwood and Seward Friday should expect delays, Alaska transportation officials said.

According to the Department of Transportation and Public Facilities, avalanche hazard reduction near mile posts 99, 97, 87, 44, 37 and 21 could cause delays of up to 45 minutes between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. A Turnagain Arm avalanche advisory was issued Friday by the Chugach National Forest Avalanche Information Center, which warned of very dangerous conditions both above and below treeline.

Updated road condition information would be posted at Alaska 511, transportation officials said.
