Avalanche closes Richardson Highway

By KTVA CBS 11 News 10:34 AM January 24, 2014

Road will be blocked for at least 24 hours

ANCHORAGE – The only road to Valdez was closed due to avalanche activity Friday morning, state transportation officials said.

A vehicle driving near mile 39.5 of the Richardson Highway was caught in a slide sometime around 8:00 a.m. According to Alaska State Trooper dispatch, the occupants of the vehicle were unharmed but the highway through Thompson Pass was completely blocked by several avalanches.

Hannah Blankenship, a spokeswoman for the Department of Transportation and Public Facilities, said crews can’t begin clearing the road until snow conditions stabilize. That could take as long as 24 hours, she said.

The Chugach National Forest Avalanche Information Center reports high avalanche danger throughout the Turnagain Arm region Friday, too.
