Authorities respond to Penland Park trailer fire

By KTVA CBS 11 News 5:57 PM August 26, 2014
ANCHORAGE –

The Anchorage Fire Department responded to a mobile home fire at 3240 Penland Parkway Tuesday evening.

At around 5:30 p.m., AFD responded to a call from Merrill Field reporting smoke at the Penland Park Trailer Park. The mobile home park is located across from the Northway Mall.

Within minutes, 13 units from AFD responded to the call. When they arrived on location, fire was venting from the windows of the trailer, says Jared Stiglich, one of the responders. The trailer’s windows were boarded and the mobile home appeared to be abandoned, he said.

“Nobody was home at the time,” said Stiglich. “It appeared to be an abandoned trailer, but somebody had been living in there.”

Those details led authorities to label it as a “suspicious fire,” possibly arson. An investigator will determine the cause of the fire.

Crews fought the fire from the outside first before moving inside and quickly extinguishing the flames, says Stiglich.

This cellphone video captured from the scene shows authorities responding to the scene.
