ANCHORAGE- Why would someone choose to sleep in the cold, rather than head to a shelter?
One homeless man living in Anchorage said he’s not staying in a shelter simply because he likes sleeping under the stars.
One woman said when Brother Francis Shelter runs out of room, the overflow goes to Bean’s Cafe. She said only men are allowed to stay there, leaving women out of luck. Representatives for Brother Francis said that’s not the case. They said if they need more room for women, they simply move some men over to the cafe.
Jason Andersson said he’d timed out of Brother Francis and the Anchorage Gospel Rescue Mission.
He said he used up all nine of his extra days at Brother Francis due to the cold and was left with no other option than to walk the streets with his friends.
Bean’s Café is taking overflow from Brother Francis Shelter, but officials with the Department of Health and Human Services said they’ve never been completely full.
