24-hour skiing

By Rick Rysso 6:53 PM March 30, 2014

4th annual SKAN 24 hit Kincaid Park this weekend

ANCHORAGE –

SKAN: It stands for Ski Kincaid All Night.

The goal is to see how many laps you can complete in 24 hours.

Skiers can compete as individuals or on a relay team consisting of two to eight skiers. Out of the 140 participants, there were eight men and two women brave enough to make the 24-hour journey on their own. Each lap was roughly six kilometers.

Last year, Grant Stevenson won the event, completing 38. Stevenson broke the Anchorage SKAN record and his own personal best this year by getting 40 laps in.

Soldotna’s Jenny Neyman won for the women, completing 30 laps. Neyman didn’t sleep at all during the event and says the biggest challenge will be driving back home.

“I think I’m dreading that more than anything today,” Neyman said. “Definitely more than the last lap or two.”
