1 dead, 1 missing in Pilot Point boating incident

By KTVA CBS 11 News 12:53 PM June 23, 2014
PILOT POINT –

One man is dead and another remains missing after their skiff capsized on the Ugashik River early Sunday morning, Alaska State Troopers said.

The two men were part of a party of four commercial fishermen operating the skiff near Pilot Point when it overturned, according to trooper dispatch. AST, Alaska Wildlife Troopers Helo-3 and a U.S. Coast Guard helicopter from Kodiak responded to the area just before 1 a.m.

Washington residents Earnest Pierce, 47, and Brandon Michael Park, 24, were able to climb on top of the overturned boat and await rescue by other fishermen in the area. But troopers said a third man and a 17-year-old boy who attempted to swim to shore were lost in the 4-foot waves.

Rescuers later located the man: He was unconscious, according to trooper dispatch, and attempts to resuscitate him were unsuccessful. AST said rescuers could not find the teenager in the water.

Troopers said none of the four men in the skiff were wearing life jackets when the boat overturned. AST is working to locate next of kin. While the Coast Guard has suspended search efforts for the missing teenager, according to dispatch, both AST and AWT continue the search.
